From 24 April to 3 May, the 10th edition of the International Sea Urchin Festival will take place. The festival marks a decade of promoting the sea urchin as a unique gastronomic and cultural delicacy. Held at the Ericeira Municipal Market, the festival has become an essential annual gathering in the Municipality of Mafra.
In addition to the seafood court, which will be open every day of the festival from 12:00 to 20:00, offering a range of seafood dishes and wines from the Mafra and Lisbon regions, Science Workshops will take place on 2 and 3 May, from 12:00 to 18:00. These workshops will be led by the Regional Research Unit of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre at the Polytechnic University of Leiria, and ARNET – Aquatic Research Network. The initiative aims to provide the general public with further knowledge about the marine ecosystem and its natural resources, particularly the sea urchin, explaining its life cycle, what part of the animal is actually consumed, and other curiosities and scientific insights.
