MARE researcher Catarina Frazão Santos will participate in the seminar “Distinguishing Marine Spatial Planning and Marine Protected Area Planning to Advance Conservation,” on October 30, in an online format. This seminar invites reflection on two essential tools for ocean conservation: marine spatial planning (MSP) and marine protected area (MPA) planning.
Although they are often confused, MSP and MPA have different purposes, use different approaches, and require specific skills. In this seminar, researchers Catarina Frazão Santos and Tundi Agardy will explain why it is important to clearly distinguish between these two processes—and how, if used together and in a complementary manner, they can have a much stronger impact on ocean protection, especially in the context of climate change.
The session will also address the risks of mixing concepts, which can hinder effective management and limit support for conservation. Practical ideas for promoting synergies between MSP and MPA will be shared, with an emphasis on climate-smart approaches and examples such as planning in Antarctica or the use of OECM (conservation measures based on areas that are not formally protected areas).
Participation is free, but registration is required HERE!
