The EDURRIO exhibition, an initiative of the Freshwater Ecology research group at MARE/ARNET, University of Coimbra, was inaugurated on October 1, National Water Day, and is being promoted by researchers Ana Raquel Calapez and Maria João Feio. The exhibition is on display at the Mealhada Environmental Interpretation Center and can be visited until October 31.
EDURRIO is a traveling exhibition that combines science and environmental awareness, with the aim of raising awareness of urban river ecosystems, their rich biodiversity, and the importance of their preservation. Through an accessible and interactive approach, the public is invited to reflect on the ecological and social value of rivers and streams in cities.
When well preserved, these ecosystems are true urban green corridors, essential for maintaining biodiversity, improving air quality, mitigating floods and extreme weather events, and increasing the well-being and health of urban populations. With aquatic communities such as fish, invertebrates, algae, and plants, and a surrounding riparian vegetation rich in birds, amphibians, reptiles, and insects, urban rivers represent a valuable and often neglected natural heritage.
The EDURRIO exhibition is funded by National Funds through FCT (UIDP/04292/2020), under the MARE Mini-Grants program, reaffirming its commitment to scientific dissemination and environmental education.
Admission is free. We invite the entire community to visit this exhibition and rediscover the vital role of urban waterways in building more sustainable and resilient cities.
