MARE à Beira-Rio

MARE à Beira-Rio is back! An event that reinforces the connection between science, riverside communities and all those who depend on our freshwater ecosystems. On 22 November, 2 and 6 December, we invite you to participate in an edition entirely dedicated to the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis), as part of a project funded by the Environmental Fund.

This initiative aims to promote dialogue about this invasive species, which has had a growing impact in Portugal. The Chinese mitten crab is a large crustacean, whose carapace can reach 10 centimetres, and is easily recognised by the densely “hairy” claws of the males. Its presence raises several ecological and socio-economic concerns: its burrowing activity affects the stability of banks and slopes, its consumption of aquatic plants interferes with sensitive habitats and, in some countries, causes damage to rice production. In Portugal, it has been associated with damage to fishing nets, as well as the consumption of fish and bait in fishing gear and traps, in addition to competing with native freshwater species, including other crustaceans.

MARE à Beira-Rio aims to create a moment of sharing between researchers and local communities, promoting the exchange of knowledge and the joint construction of strategies that allow us to understand and mitigate the impacts of this invasive species. We invite all interested parties to join us for three days dedicated to science, nature, and the future of our riverine ecosystems.
