MARE is one of the first scientific institutions to sign the creation of an International Alliance of Scientific Institutions to save the ocean

MARE is one of the first scientific institutions to sign the Brussels declaration that sets the stage for the creation of an International Alliance of Scientific Institutions. These institutions will be part of IPOS, the International Panel for Ocean Sustainability, to be established with the support of the European Commission and various international institutions.

Protecting the oceans, which cover 70% of the Earth, is a "call" from the ocean itself that is not being properly heard. Therefore, researchers seek the establishment of an international body that coordinates studies and provides information to policymakers. Taking the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a model to build a scientific council.

The proposal for IPOS will be presented during the United Nations' Ocean Conference in 2025.
