Ideas and more ideas to solve the problem of marine litter

EU Climate - Climate Innovation in Southern European Waters, funded by EIT Climate-KIC, and led by MARE and FCT from NOVA University of Lisbon, in partnership with the Portuguese Association of Marine Waste (APLM), is an European project in which also participate Greece and Croatia.

With the aim of reducing marine litter and the contribution of the fishing, tourism and cargo vessels sectors to prevent the production of plastic waste, the project BL. EU Climate held, last 19th November, a participatory Workshop: Contributions to the reduction of plastics in the fishing and maritime-port sectors. The workshop took place in Lisbon, at the Rocha do Conde d 'Óbidos Maritime Gare - Port of Lisbon - Alcântara, and was attended by various public and private entities, such as sectoral associations, NGOs, port authorities and waste management operators.

The initial part of the workshop focused on brief presentations about the problem of marine litter and the results already achieved with the implementation of BL. EU Climate (e.g. questionnaires, waste characterization campaigns). Subsequently, two collaborative working sessions followed at the three working desks, each dedicated to one of the sectors under study, namely fishing, tourism and cargo ships. Sharing ideas and knowledge among participants “led” this workshop. All contributions will be part of the final document produced by the European partners.
