MARE joins the newly established Monitoring Commission for Lamprey and Shad Fishing

MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Center at the University of Évora has joined the newly established Monitoring Commission for Lamprey and Shad Fishing, marking a significant step that reflects the long-term research efforts undertaken by its scientists to study these migratory species.

The Commission, formalized by a decree published in the Diário da República, aims to assess the ecological, economic, and social challenges of lamprey and shad fishing, propose management measures, and oversee the implementation of a sustainable conservation plan.

MARE’s participation highlights the vital role of science in shaping effective strategies for these fisheries, continuing decades of research on the impact of environmental changes, river barriers, and population dynamics affecting these species.

The Commission will be coordinated by the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety, and Maritime Services (DGRM) and will include representatives from various environmental, scientific, and regulatory organizations, as well as fishing associations and municipalities where lamprey and shad fishing is practiced.

By joining this initiative, MARE – University of Évora reinforces its commitment to producing scientific knowledge that supports the sustainability of fishery resources and contributes to informed conservation decisions for lamprey and shad populations.
