Rui Rosa, researcher at MARE – Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences, leads the new thematic collection “Advances in Cephalopod Research,” published in the prestigious journal Marine Biology (Springer). The initiative brings together more than 50 scientific articles and comes within the scope of the triennial conference of the Cephalopod International Advisory Council (CIAC), held in Sesimbra, Portugal.
The collection “Advances in Cephalopod Research” reflects the latest advances in global research on cephalopods, comprising a total of 52 articles. The topics covered are diverse and range from taxonomy, genetics, and reproduction to climate change, aquaculture, and animal welfare. This compilation follows on from the previous collection “Cephalopods in the Anthropocene: Multiple Challenges in a Changing Ocean,” consolidating Rui Rosa's role as a central figure in research on these marine invertebrates.
The initiative is part of the CIAC triennial conference, which took place in April 2022 in Sesimbra. The event was attended by 275 participants (166 in person and 109 online) from 33 countries and included 90 oral presentations and 145 posters. CIAC, active since 1983, has been a leading entity in supporting and defining priorities for scientific research on cephalopods worldwide.
The new collection aims to serve as a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for researchers, marine resource managers, and policymakers at a time when cephalopods are becoming increasingly important in ocean ecosystems and sustainable fisheries.
The next CIAC conference is already scheduled: October 25 to November 1, 2025, in Okinawa, Japan. The event will continue to be an essential platform for the exchange of knowledge among students, young researchers, and international experts.
