Portuguese government chooses António Carmona Rodrigues as President of Águas de Portugal

António Carmona Rodrigues, a member of MARE from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (MARE-NOVA), will be the next chairman of the Águas de Portugal - AdP Group, following the resignation of José Furtado last April.

The statement comes from the Ministry of the Environment, which justifies the decision with Professor Carmona Rodrigues' “vast curriculum in the areas of water resources, hydraulics and the environment”.

After serving as Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing, Mayor of Lisbon and President of the Portuguese Water Resources Association, António Carmona Rodrigues now takes the helm of the AdP Group. With exclusively public capital, the AdP Group includes national and international companies, and in addition to the integrated management of the urban water cycle, it has also been active in the area of renewable energies.

With a degree in Civil Engineering, António Carmona Rodrigues specialized in River Hydraulic Engineering in the Netherlands at the IHE Delf Institute for Water Education, and in 1992 in Environmental Engineering with a PhD from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he is an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering. During his 40 years of experience, he has participated in and been responsible for various research projects in the areas of water resource management and water quality modeling in rivers and reservoirs. He is also coordinator and head of the Armando Lencaste Hydraulics Laboratory at FCT/UNL.

He is currently a member of the Order of Engineers, the National Water Council, the Portuguese National Commission for Great Barriers, the Academy of Engineering, the Portuguese Water Resources Association, and is a former national rugby champion.
