This project aims at the sustainable management of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), a species introduced in Portugal and other European countries that, despite having negative impacts on the ecosystem, has been a resource of great socio-economic importance. This project is promoting: a) the establishment of partnership agreements for collaboration between independent scientific bodies and fishermen, for the participatory management of the Manila clam, b) the collection of data not available in the National Data Collection Program, concerning the status of bivalve populations in estuarine systems; and c) the development of studies aimed at generating essential knowledge for the management of sustainable fishing for the Manila clam at national level.
