MARE promotes webinar on the conservation of seahorses in the Sad Estuary

On November 20, MARE had the pleasure of hosting a special webinar in collaboration with Mardive, ICNF, Lisbon Oceanarium, and Escola Azul, with the aim of raising awareness and educating young people about the importance of seahorses and ocean conservation. The activity was a resounding success, involving 2,017 students from 80 classes in various regions of Portugal, including the archipelagos, and even a class from Brazil.

The students had the unique opportunity to participate in an immersive experience, watching live a dive in the Sado Estuary, directly from the ICNF vessel, the “Arrábida I.” During the broadcast, the efforts of the MARDIVE/MARE-NOVA project researchers, who are dedicated to the study and preservation of seahorses in the Sado, were presented.

In addition, participants were also invited to “visit” an exclusive area of the Lisbon Oceanarium, where they could observe juvenile seahorses in the process of growing, deepening their knowledge about these fascinating fish. The visit provided an even clearer understanding of the importance of seahorses for the ecological balance of the ocean.

Feedback from participants was extremely positive, with many highlighting the enthusiasm generated by the dynamic format and high-quality content presented.

The collaboration between the entities involved was fundamental to the success of this initiative, which not only educated but also motivated students to protect the ocean and its endangered species. As a result, MARE and its partners hope that participants will share the knowledge they have acquired and become active advocates for marine conservation in their communities.
