Ocean Hackathon 2025

From October 17 to 19, Peniche will host the second local edition of Ocean Hackathon®, an international event that brings together students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and professionals from various fields for 48 consecutive hours with a common goal: to develop innovative solutions to global ocean challenges.

Taking place simultaneously in 11 cities around the world, this competition connects Peniche to an international blue innovation network, promoting collaboration and the development of technologies geared towards marine sustainability.

In this edition, five challenges were selected, submitted by national and international entities, addressing emerging issues in the context of the oceans, such as:

  • Sustainable aquaculture
  • Monitoring of micro and nanoplastics
  • Marine biodiversity
  • Traceability of food products
  • Monitoring of physical, biological, and chemical parameters of the marine environment

Participating teams will have access to specialized databases, digital tools, and the support of national and international mentors with experience in a wide range of areas related to the sea. The goal is to transform data into prototypes with real applicability, contributing to the preservation and sustainable management of the oceans.

The event is organized by the Peniche Pole of the Blue Hub Network – Smart Ocean, in partnership with the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, namely the School of Tourism and Marine Technology (ESTM) and its research unit, MARE – Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences, with the support of the Municipality of Peniche and the Blue Hub Network Portugal.

Ocean Hackathon® is an international initiative promoted by Campus Mondial de la Mer, based in Brest, France, which aims to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of the blue economy.
