Abstract:

The main objective of this project is the reduction of mortality rates in the mussel cultures of the Lagoa de Albufeira, resulting from the invasion by non-indigenous species. This objective is related to the recent mortalities observed in the mussel production structures of Lagoa de Albufeira, caused by the occurrence of biological invasions, in particular the tunicate Styela plicata. This project will identify the invasive species in the Lagoa de Albufeira, understand the evolution of its population dynamics in function of the environmental conditions, identify the impacts of the invasions and determine the areas of major risk, allowing to map the areas with greater aquaculture aptitude. Protection of the lagoon's potential for aquaculture will be promoted through the identification of potential vectors for introduction of invasive species and the development of techniques to minimize adverse effects. Possible exploitation uses of the invasive species will also be investigated.
