José Guerreiro unveils new plans for IPMA

MARE researcher and the new president of IPMA, José Guerreiro, gives an interview to Público in which he details his plans for the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere. It's expected the emphasis on scientific research on topics where the connection between oceans and climate is fundamental.
He strongly believes in "interconnecting" knowledge, considering it necessary to "strengthen the coordination with the national scientific and technological system to provide the best possible responses to public challenges, such as predicting extreme weather phenomena or improving short and medium-term weather forecasts. In his view, the mission is to "serve the public."
He speaks of a "new normality" we have to learn to deal with. He also discusses new investments, especially regarding the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which allowed the installation of new radars and collaboration with the Government of the Azores to develop an Atlantic Climate Observatory. He also mentions advancements expected in the field of geophysics.
And there's more news: The research vessel Mário Ruivo is ready to return to the sea in mid-October. He reveals the opening of "the vessel to the scientific community so that our research centers can use this national equipment." He emphasizes the importance of international cooperation, particularly with CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries) nations. To achieve this, IPMA is recruiting professionals and opening career advancement competitions for researchers.
