Between May 2 and 4, the municipality of São Pedro do Sul will host the 1st Environmental Days - Bioblitz Lafões, a pioneering event in the region that brings together citizens, scientists and naturalists in a joint effort to inventory local biodiversity.
This Bioblitz, the first to be held in the Lafões region, will take place over three days on the River Trouce, a tributary of the River Vouga, and the Ribeira de Vagem, a tributary of the River Sul. The main aim is to record as many species as possible in a limited space and time, contributing to science, environmental management and raising public awareness of our natural heritage.
Unlike other Bioblitz that have taken place in Portugal - usually centered on urban areas such as Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra - this initiative takes the spirit of citizen science to the interior of the country, promoting more direct contact with nature and knowledge of biodiversity in less explored riverside areas.
During the event, various taxonomic groups will be surveyed, such as plants, aquatic invertebrates, insects, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, with the support of specialists in each area.
One of the highlight activities will take place at dusk on May 2, with a session dedicated to observing nocturnal insects, using luminous decoys to attract and identify species that are active at dusk and during the night.
More than just a scientific activity, the Lafões Bioblitz is also intended to be a fun, educational and inclusive event, open to all interested parties, from the curious to professionals. By encouraging the direct involvement of the local community, this action contributes to more effective biodiversity conservation, creating bridges between citizens, researchers and decision-makers.
